Compartmentation

Fire compartmentation is an important element of PFP. NBC, IBC and Red book have made it mandatory in building regulation. Compartmentation solves two purposes :

1.Contains fire in the compartment

2. The evacuation path remain protected from fire & smoke .

The protection measures taken are :

– The escape route needs to be separated from the rest of the premises.

– Doors (including cupboards, ducts and shafts linking floors), walls, floors and ceilings protecting escape routes should be resisting the passage of smoke and fire.

Where false ceilings are provided, the fire resistance should extend up to the floor slab level above. Cavity barriers, fire stopping and dampers in ducts should be appropriately installed
